Common causes of foot pain
- Heel pain is the most common type of foot pain and is due to the fact that we walk around on our heels all day long! Underneath the foot there is a strong band of tissue called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia supports the foot as we walk heel to toe, bending and stretching with each step. With overuse and overstretching small tears form in the plantar fascia. This results in swelling and pain of the heel.

If the small tears are left to heal naturally then scar tissue will form. Scar tissue leads to a thickening of the plantar fascia which makes the underneath of the foot feel tight and tense. Massaging the heel and foot can help heal the small tears before scar tissue forms helping the foot to stay flexible and pain free.
A sprained ankle is when the ligaments supporting the ankle joint are overstretched or partially torn. Ligaments are strong bands that hold one bone to another. Ankle sprains are very common and are normally a result of an injury; turning too quickly or overstretching the ankle joint. “Going over on one ankle” is a common cause of a sprained ankle. There is pain and swelling around the ankle and it is painful to put weight down onto the affected leg.
If you cannot put any weight onto the affected leg then you should consult your doctor. Otherwise you can treat the ankle pain with massage therapy. Muscles and ligaments need increased blood circulation in order to repair and heal. Massage brings about the increased blood supply. Massaging tight ligaments can reduce stiffness within the joint allowing you to move it more freely. Muscle spasms are also reduced by removing muscle tension.
