Common causes of calf pain

  • Leg cramps can cause calf pain. They are experienced a dull aching and spasms in either one of both legs. Leg cramps can affect anyone of any age and do not normally have a medical cause. One in three women experience leg cramps in the last trimester of their pregnancy. Leg cramps and calf pain are usually worse in the night. The cramp is a tightening of the muscle in the calf, which causes the leg to spasm. The spasms can last for a few seconds up to ten minutes and can make one feel very restless.

  • Leg cramps are relieved by leg massage just before going to sleep and through regular exercise during the day. Massaging the muscle relaxes any tension within the muscle which leads to the spasms and cramps. Helping the muscles relax will help you to relax and have a good nights sleep. Pregnant women find that leg massage really helps with calf pain.
  • Calf pain can also be caused by overuse of the calf muscle. Stretching the muscle can result in micro tears (small breaks in the muscle fibres), which need adequate blood supply to heal. Massage increases blood flow to the muscle stimulating and encouraging growth and repair within the calf muscle. Calf pain is common after exercising; running, cycling, swimming. In order to prevent damage to the muscles it is important to keep them flexible in order to prevent muscle damage. Therapeutic massage using the uSqueez leg massager both before and after exercise helps to prevent and treat muscle damage.
