Common causes of back pain

80% of people will experience back pain at least once in their lifetime. If you have back pain, both acute or chronic then you are certainly not alone. It is not surprising when you consider that the muscles supporting the spine are supporting our body’s weight all day every day. - Bad posture when sitting and standing put huge amounts of strain on the muscles in the back. The strain is usually targeted towards the muscles of the lower back. This is because of the natural curvature of the spine. Around the lower back ‘the lumbar region’ the spine naturally curves inwards. To reduce the strain we often find ourselves hunching over desks, tables and laptops. This puts strain on our upper back, shoulders and neck. We are by nature creatures of habit and day in day out assume the same posture as the day before. These bad habits mean that our muscles become tight and fixed leading to chronic pain and stiffness. In order to regain a healthier posture we first need to loosen up the back muscles.
- Massage relieves tension within muscles and reduces muscle stiffness. Encouraging your back muscles to be more supple and flexible will help to regain a healthy and relaxed posture. Daily massage can help strengthen the muscles supporting the spine thus reducing the stress put on the back.
- If bad posture is the problem then massage can help too but first you need to correct the way you sit at work. Here are a few tips; your computer screen should be roughly an arms length away. The screen should be in you direct line of vision so that you are not having to bend you neck to look up or down at it. Your chair should be at a height so that your feet are flat on the floor. Take regular breaks and massage your neck, shoulders and back every few hours when sitting down for long periods of time. uRelax is perfect for this. It sits on your office chair so that you don’t even have to move for your massage.
